Thousands of drivers will be compromising passenger safety by overloading their cars this Easter, according to LV=.
Research by the insurer’s road rescue arm, Britannia, suggests that around 6.7 million Brits will drive to UK holiday destinations during the Easter break, with one in ten packing their car full to the brim.
Unfortunately, they will then be taking to roads that are peppered with potholes and surface damage, as a result of the harsh winter.
With eight out of ten motorist surveyed having no idea of the maximum weight their car can carry, Britannia is predicting a surge in both breakdowns and accidents.
LV= is therefore advising those planning to carry heavy loads to think carefully about the risks, particularly as overworked suspension does not combined well with road damage.
According to Britannia, and overloaded vehicle’s springs, wheel bearings, tyres and suspension systems are strained, braking effectiveness is reduced, steering is harder to control and there is an increased risk of the engine overheating.
